What would it take to get Wind Power?

Joseph Romm in Salon on Windpower

This is another good primer on wind power. What's currently going on, and how that affects future development in the sector.

There aren't many folks who can make wind turbines in the states any more.

And with China buying up all the scrap metal, the cost of that commodity has gone up as well. And the dollar has fallen.  So things are pointed in the wrong direction on many levels.

Substance over Style in eco

Washingtonpost article on looking green vs. being green.

The writer tries to show that while small efforts can bring people together, the real savings are from choices made one time and followed automatically afterwards.

Having things start the conversation, is just a start.  Real movement is going to be needed afterwards.  Systemic change is the only way to execute correctly.  Everything else is activity with no action

NASA says that humans have an impact

Humans have an impact on the earth's climate.

We do believe that climate change is real, but the more proof that exists the stronger the argument.

UPS ordering new vehicles

This is more of what I expected

200 Hybrids, 300 Natural Gas Trucks on order.

Here the economics will start to make a dent.  In 2007, the VP of Fed Ex said that in 2006, Fed Ex burned 1.3 billion gallons of gasoline.

The original Hybrid design with UPS was back in 2004, when the economics were determined not to be viable for hybrids (the design was done with environmental defense).  Back in 2004, gas hit a "record" price of $2/gallon.

With gas at $4/gallon, the economics look very different for companies like UPS/Fed Ex.

Again, they're not going green because they want to.  Purely economics forces them to.

Nissan Desperate play?

Then again, maybe Nissan is Desperate?

Here is MarketWatch's analysis on the poor performance numbers of that company.

A drop of 30% is nothing to be ignored.

If the electric vehicle play is the last gambit, then I hope it works well.  Otherwise Datsun/Nissan might join a lot of other companies in the dumpster.

Nissan Electric Car by 2010

CNBC's link of NY Times article on Nissan's electric car.

It is great to see one of the major mfgs talk about getting a full line of electric vehicles within 2 years.

The push is because the economics look viable to them.

I always thought it would be in fleet vehicles, delivery vans, etc.  that would be the best economic argument.  But if Nissan is able to take the electric car mantle, the same way that Toyota has taken the hybrid crown, then it could be very good news for the auto mfg.

More public Transportation use

Increase in Bus and rail use, from NY Times.

Looks like increased fuel prices is what it took to hike ridership up around the country.  An interesting study would be to see how much people valued freedom and independence.  The cost of the vehicle vs. public transportation.

Higher gas prices will lead to a reduced carbon footprint, more effectively and quicker than any government program or initiative.  It's why I'm still a believer in free markets.

Sun as cheap as coal

Inabitat's bit on Sunrgi

The concept of cheap coal is still out there. Italy's move to coal fired plants is because they believe the cost will be cheaper than alternative power, even after paying for carbon credits.

This process is one of many that are out there, while it may not be ideal for every region, getting the price down will be a key component to getting solar installed in more areas
